We recently received a drawing of Read's Mill done in 1867 by Ada Jewett while she was a student at KUA.
Read's Mill was located on Daniels Road. The PHS put a historic marker there some years ago.
The gristmill was built by David Read and his son Septimus in 1816. They hand dug a canal a mile long from the Blow Me Down Brook to the mill, and sections of the the canal are still visible. The mill stopped operating in the 1880s and later was turned into a summer house by Clara Davidge. Various Cornish Colony artists stayed in the mill at different times. There are numerous photos of a family posed in and around the large white house. Although hard to see in these pictures, there are elaborate cornice mouldings over the first floor windows of the large house that should be a clue.
