Art Pease of Lebanon has been digitizing a weekly paper called The Landmark, which was published from 1882-1952 in White River. Each week there was a column about Plainfield, which Art has been sharing. Most of the news is about people who are visiting, or are ill.
Here are a few tidbits from Feb. and March 1889. Clearly townspeople had much more active social lives than we do today.
E.C. Daniels has bought a flock of ducks of John Goold and will raise ducks instead of turkeys.
Mrs. F.W. Daniels is having a new bath house built.
Mary Colby returned from New London last week, as the school is closed in consequence of diphtheria.
A surprise party and oyster supper was enjoyed by a goodly number at Harrison Jordan’s.
The Hartland dramatic company presented to a fair audience at the town hall Saturday. The drama titled “The Fireman” followed by the laughable farce “Paddle Your Own Canoe”.
If there were a few more young men in Hartland to act as escorts for the young ladies crossing the river to attend parties on this side, perhaps less shoes would be lost.
Surprise parties are quite plenty this winter, there being one every Friday night. Last week about fifty gathered at Lewis Jordan’s and spent a very pleasant evening.
B.N Jordan is the champion chopper in this vicinity, chopping , splitting and piling on an average of two cords per day.
The farmers have most of them hired young men about town, paying from $10 to $23 per month.

We have been scanning a roll of pictures that were taken in 1952 donated by the family of teacher, Richard Rogers. The roll of pictures must have been given to the Plainfield school by the school photographer. If you attended or know of someone (parents, grandparents) who attended the village school in the early 50s in grades 1-8, there is a good chance their picture may be in this post. Please help us identify as many as possible.

We were recently given some items from the family of Richard Rogers who was a teacher at the Plainfield School in the 1950s. Can you help us identify some of the names from the class of ‘52 who gave this wooden board to him made by Mrs. Corrette’s husband!
